UK University Application Process

How to Apply to Universities in UK

Because there are over one hundred British Institutions which accept students with different criteria, entry requirements are likely to vary. If an undergraduate candidate doesn't have very good High School scores or any acceptable Certificate of English language (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) he or she must pass the GCE A-level exam type or complete the necessary Foundation Course (Foundation Programme).

UCAS Application Form

To be admitted to a British University, you must complete the appropriate online application form via UCAS

Apart from their online application, candidates have to send some additional documents to each University. In addition, every candidate should make a Personal Statement which is like a CV (750 words). Typically, each candidate also needs to provide two letters of reference.

For most candidates, the application procedures are tedious and time-consuming. Anglia Foudation is a language institute that undertakes responsibly to bring about the processing of your Application and all the necessary procedures, such as official translations. Anglia Foundation can guide you and support you throughout the whole process. We may also process all the applications on your behalf. As a result, your chances of being admitted are increased. In addition to that, you don't need to be involved with complex and lengthy procedures.

Foundation Courses in UK

Foundation Courses (also known as Foundation Programmes) bridge the gap between the qualifications you have and those you need to enter onto an undergraduate degree course in Britain. Foundation Programmes are one-year preliminary courses offered by British universities to their candidate students. Anglia Foundation offers such courses in Greece for most fields of study, in co-operation with distinguished UK Universities in the teaching of their Foundation Courses. Of course, you can always choose to follow a Foundation Programme in UK.

The Winter Foundation Programme takes place from October to June. The lessons take place 4 or 5 days a week, usually morning hours from Monday to Friday. The lessons are: English, IELTS preparation, Study Skills, Computing, two direction courses and a free choice course. The method of scoring at the Foundation Programme: 40% of the score is participation and homework, 10% belongs to the Midterm examinations and 50% to the Final Examinations. The criteria for admission to the First year are as follows: a) The total score at the Foundation Programme has to be Pass (40%), until Excellent (80%) and b) Most Universities ask for the IELTS Proficiency. The score has to range from 5.5 to 7 out of 9.

UCAS Application Procedure

UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) is a British admission service to the higher British Educational Institutions. This organization processes and sends the candidates’ applications to the educational institutes of their choice. Through the UCAS procedure, candidates have the chance to know which Universities offer the curriculum they want, to make an application towards them, having in priority the institutions they prefer and follow the progress of their application. The aforementioned applications are made through an online system. Anglia Foundation as a registered UCAS School, has the capability to inform you for the procedure and progress of the applications and documents that will be required.

The procedure of the UCAS Applications begins every 1st of September of the Academic year and the first stage of the submission of the applications is up until 15th of January. From the 16th of January until the 30th of June of the same Academic year, Universities keep accepting Applications and offer places only if they still have places available. Then, the Applications submitted after the 30th of June get into another procedure, which is called Clearing. The Clearing procedure is implemented when a candidate has not secured a position into a University or a course of his choice. By Clearing he can apply for any left positions that may occur, so substantially this is the candidate’s last chance to get into an institution. Only the Universities that want and have positions take place in the Clearing process, which they do not guarantee any kind of accommodation. Lastly, each candidate can make one and only UCAS application, where he declares up to five (5) higher Educational Institutions or Curriculums of his preference.

Key words that are necessary to know in order to fully understand the procedure, are listed below in the order we meet them:

1. Application Number- Ucas ID Number: This is a 9 digit registration number, unique for each candidate, that is given to the candidates after they have sent their application.

2. Conditional Offer: This is the place offer at the University under specific conditions. The candidate in order to become accepted has to fulfill those conditions.

3. Unconditional Offer: It is the University offer without further demands or conditions.

4. Firm Offer: It is the place offer by the University that has been declared as a first choice.

5. Insurance Offer: This is about the place offer by the University that has been declared as a safe choice, in case the candidate does not enter his first choice.

6. Unsuccessful: This is the case where no place exists at a University.

7. Withdrawal: This is the withdrawal of the candidates’ application if a curriculum delays or is discontinued.

8. Confirmation: It is the confirmation of acceptance at the University.

9. Track: This is about the monitoring system for the progress of the application that is made online.

10. Extra: That is the candidate’s possibility to add one more choice of a University or a Curriculum, if there has not been an offer by the already declared ones, until the expiry of the deadlines.

11. Clearing: It has already been explained above.

Finance your Studies in UK

How to finance your studies in the UK

For a typical student, the cost of living in Britain is estimated at 800-1,100 pounds (900-1,300 euros) per month, depending on the amenities that each one requests; this represents an estimate for the rent, food, transport and miscellaneous expenses. Remember that your monthly costs will depend on your personal life style and the location of the University. A student who lives in London or Brighton may need more money than a student who lives in Durham or Swansea.

Undergraduate students of the European Union need to pay an annual tuition fee of  £3,300 pounds sterling or more. Postgraduate students of the European Union need to pay an annual tuition fee of  £4,500 pounds sterling or more. The fees are paid back by the British state and returned to the student in monthly installments after graduation only if that particular student does not exceed the annual income threshold of 24,000 euros.

If you are a client of Anglia Foundation, student fees should not worry you at all. We can apply for a student loan on your behalf. Another way of financing your studies is the student grant.

Apart from the above, Anglia Foundation can help you to apply for scholarships, fellowships or special studentships in order to reduce the cost of your studies. Please contact us directly.

Student loan in UK

The British Ministry of Education provides student loans in order to help students. Every undergraduate student who has been accepted by a British University is entitled to a student loan. The loan amount is equal to the University's tuition fees (e.g. 3,300 pounds). The loan is interest-free and should be paid back after graduation only if that particular student works in Britain and exceeds the annual income threshold of 24,000 euros. If we make the application for you, the student loan is guaranteed. We also need to emphasise that practically none of our clients has been asked to repay the student loan.

If you need more information about students loans or you decide to apply for a student loan yourself, you may visit the British Government's page about finance for students from EU countries. We need to emphasise that this is not a simple procedure.

Student grant in UK

The student grant may be an amount up to 1.600 pounds per year of study. Such grants are given according to each University's policy. No student can ensure a student grant. Nevertheless, because we have great experience in the field, we can apply for a student grant on your behalf with a relatively good chance of success. Normally, three out of ten Anglia Foundation clients, get a student grant.

Scholarships in UK

Scholarships, fellowships and various studentships are additional ways of financing your studies. Most of these scholarships are for postgraduate students aiming for a Masters degree (MSc, MPhil) or a Doctorate (PhD). The amounts of the scholarships or fellowships may vary. You can find information about scholarships in European Union by clicking here and choosing "Fellowship Programmes".

UK University Project Support

How to get Assistance for University Projects or written tasks in the UK

The educational system of Great Britain is different from other countries. The courses are more oriented to the practical work (projects or written tasks) than on exams. Sometimes students who are not accustomed to this system are likely to face difficulties especially if they are required to deliver many different tasks in a short time. Also, some students may need more time than others to prepare their work because English is not their native language.

Anglia Foundation has the necessary experience to assist and support students to perform student work on time and efficiently. For more details, please contact us.

But there are cases of young people wishing to upgrade their degrees or diplomas.
