In all programmes, students have the opportunity to benefit from a year spent working in industry or studying abroad.
ENGLISH
The department continues the Durham tradition of good teaching with individual attention to students. In the Higher Education Funding Council's last Teaching Quality Assessment it was awarded an 'Excellent' (the highest grade). The assessors praised 'a curriculum which combines traditional and innovative features and is delivered with admirable rigour and integrity'.
The department combines a strong research profile and excellent publication record with a long-standing and continuing commitment to its undergraduate teaching. Staff interests cover the full spectrum of English literature from Anglo-Saxon to the present day, and different critical approaches to literature.
This degree has been specially designed both to offer you a firm grounding in English Literature from the Middle Ages to the present, and to provide you with a unique opportunity to broaden your knowledge and to make full use of a huge range of available options. This flexibility means that, through guided choice, you will be able to tailor your degree to your own developing interests and fascinations. Following a foundation year in which you take modules introducing you to the different genres and approaches to the study of English Literature, our tutors will help you to choose an appropriate pathway that will allow you to develop your studies in whatever way best suits your intellectual interests and to take advantage of the range of expertise amongst the Department’s staff. Each pathway provides a thorough grounding in your chosen area but also offers the opportunity to expand your learning beyond your chosen specialism and beyond the traditional boundaries of ‘English Literature’.We have four pathways: The English Pathway; The World and Comparative Literature Pathway; The North American Pathway; The Theory Pathway.
